Always be ready for the unexpected.
It can be tempting to drive faster when we think we’re alone. Empty roads can create a false sense of security which can lead drivers to go faster than the set speed limit. However, pedestrians, wildlife and other vulnerable road users can show up at any time and unexpectedly.
Higher speeds shorten the window of time we have to react to the unexpected. Higher speeds increase the distance it takes to come to a complete stop. Speed limits are in place to reduce risk and are determined by a number of factors. When speed limits are set, they assume road and weather conditions are ideal. This means when conditions include ice and snow, you need more time to stop and the posted limit is too fast.
It’s never just you on the road. If the unexpected happens, those few clicks over the posted speed limit could have deadly consequences, especially during the colder months where roads can be slick with ice.
Know the posted speed limit, drive to conditions and watch your speed.
